The establishment of the Africa Parliamentary Knowledge Network (APKN) was discussed among members and officials from twelve parliamentary delegations from African assemblies and the Pan-African Parliament at a Parliamentary Conference hosted by the National Assembly of Nigeria in Abuja in March 2007.
The Conference, supported by the United Nations, and taking place under the auspices of the Pan African Parliament agreed on the establishment of the Africa Parliamentary Knowledge Network. The APKN is meant to promote at a continental level the training and capacity building of members of parliaments and parliamentary staff in the area of:
- legislation
- information & research
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
As a first step toward its formal constitution, APKN is promoting its first Conference "Building open and learning parliaments in Africa".
The Conference is jointly organised by the People’s Assembly of Egypt, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Africa i-Parliament Action Plan) and the Global Centre for ICT in Parliament, under the auspices of the Pan African Parliament.

This site aims to become the virtual space where staff from the African Parliaments share their knowledge and build their own capacity in a sustainable way.
